National merit semifinalists

Eight students from diocesan high schools were named national merit semifinalists this year. Roughly 16,000 of the high scorers, representing less than 1 percent of the nation’s high school graduating seniors, qualify as semifinalists. They then have the opportunity to advance in the competition for awards.

The diocesan students are:

Bishop O’Connell High School, Arlington: Grace Faughnan, Anna Rienzi and Miles Woodcock.

Bishop Ireton High School, Alexandria: Andrew Matherne.

Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School, Potomac Shores: Emily Runyan and James Bertram.

St. Paul VI Catholic High School, Chantilly: Katrina Boland and Peter Delacourt.
