Simbang Gabi Masses to be celebrated around diocese

Catholic Filipino Ministry of Northern Virginia and the
Office of Multicultural Ministries are sponsoring Advent
Simbang Gabi Masses throughout the Arlington Diocese.

Simbang Gabi, one of the longest and most popular traditions
of the U.S. Filipino Catholic community, is a novena to the
Blessed Mother. The novena begins Dec. 15 and culminates Dec.
23. In some churches, the panuluyan, Tagalog for “asking for
lodgings,” is reenacted showing the effort of Joseph and Mary
to find a suitable birthplace.

Simbang Gabi Masses will be held Dec. 15-23 at St. Charles
Borromeo Parish, 3304 N. Washington Blvd., Arlington, at 5
a.m., and evening Masses will be held at various parishes,
including a Dec. 15 Mass celebrated by Arlington Bishop Paul
S. Loverde at St. Theresa Parish, 21371 St. Theresa Ln.,
Ashburn, at 7:30 p.m.
