The Diocese of Arlington has received notice from the Diocese of Alexandria (Louisiana) that Father William Erbacher, a priest who previously served in active ministry in the Diocese of Arlington, has been accused of the sexual abuse of a minor in 1974. Father Erbacher denies the allegations. The incident is alleged to have occurred in Louisiana when Father Erbacher was a member of the Brothers of the Holy Eucharist religious community. He was not ordained a priest until 1987.

This riveting account of the heroic contributions of 35 chaplains and missionaries during World War II is nearly impossible to put down. The author, John F. Wukovits, is a renowned military historian who melds rigorous research with expert storytelling. The result is an inspiring and richly detailed narrative that reveals the challenges that these religious — priests along with some brothers and sisters of Notre Dame's Congregation of Holy Cross — faced.

I would like to suggest that the theme uniting this month’s events could be communion and dialogue — a “culture of encounter” — to borrow a favorite phrase of Pope Francis. And yet, in our hyper-polarized society, true dialogue seems more difficult than ever.

In today's climate of mistrust, rejection and nationalism, the world urgently needs peacemakers and politicians who protect and lovingly serve others, Pope Francis said in his annual message for the World Day of Peace Jan. 1.

Delivering his formal Christmas message and blessing, Pope Francis prayed for a world where all people would recognize that they are brothers and sisters and would work for justice and for peace.
