Brother Mickey O'Neill McGrath, best known for his bright colors and whimsical style, returned to Northern Virginia last week to reflect on art, faith and Salesian spirituality during an Oct. 27-28 retreat at St. John Neumann Church in Reston and an Oct. 29 breakfast sponsored by the Women of Our Lady of Good Counsel at Westwood Country Club in Vienna.

Local elementary and middle school girls from the metro area, including several diocesan schools, participated in the annual cheerleading clinic at Ireton. They performed with cheerleaders from Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria for the Oct. 28 varsity football game between Ireton and Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax.

The combined years of wisdom seated in the pews of the Greenspring retirement community chapel in Springfield was beyond measure Friday morning. More than 150 seniors, caregivers and members of management gathered for a special Mass with Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge Oct. 27.  

Father Joseph Verbis Lafleur, a World War II chaplain who gave his life while saving others on a Japanese prison ship, was honored posthumously with the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart in a ceremony in Opelousas.
