The Catholic Media Association bestowed 33 awards on the Catholic Herald and gave five awards to Bishop Michael F. Burbidge and other representatives of the Arlington diocese at the organization’s annual meeting in Baltimore June 9. CMA received more than 4,000 entries in the competition from throughout the U.S. and Canada for the 2022 calendar year.

The Herald received four first-place awards, including two for David Garcia, graphic designer, and the advertising team, and two more for Staff Writer Zoey Maraist’s work on “The Eucharist Explained” and “The Lord of Miracles,” which captures how Peruvian Catholics locally celebrate a centuries-rich tradition. Ana Lucia Batista, digital and social media specialist, won two awards for her video illustrating how the Catholic Herald is printed and delivered every two weeks and a second-place honor in the best electronic newsletter category. Editorial Assistant Meghan Bartlett’s examination of how Catholics with same-sex attraction stay faithful to church teachings garnered two awards and Managing Editor Ann M. Augherton received four awards for her “On the Road: Austria & Germany” stories and photos.

Bishop Burbidge’s Twitter account was named the third best among bishops and the “Walk Humbly Podcast” he co-hosts with diocesan Chief Communications Officer Billy Atwell received an honorable mention. Additionally, three diocesan videos were recognized, including one that received first place.

“Congratulations to all award winners on your well-deserved recognition,” said Kevin Schweers, executive editor of content. “The dedicated Catholic Herald team works hard to deliver the best possible and timely content to parishes and households across the Arlington diocese. It’s encouraging to see those efforts affirmed in this annual competition. Thank you to the parishes, pastors and sponsors who make all of this work possible.”
